We’re open – 31st August 2015
A decade of planning, waiting, uncertainty and eventually anticipation has come to an end. During August the new Gerard Buxton Sports Ground in Royal Wootton Bassett has played host to its first sporting activities. The RWB Town Football Club kicked off the new season at the ground in early August, and on 22 August the Tennis Club held its first members’ day on the freshly painted courts.
Even though sporting action is underway there’s plenty of work to be done before the official opening of the Sports Grounds on 5 September. The past few summer weeks have seen a whirlwind of construction work across the site – from the clubhouse interior decoration, to the laying out of the carparks, and alterations to the access from Brinkworth Road. It’s all coming together very well, and from the first weekend in September the site will be fully operational.
Yes, there is much to be done in terms of landscaping, and finishing the highway improvements and pedestrian access, but the fantastic news is that the site has been commissioned and handed over to the Sports Association for ongoing management. A great day for the community of Royal Wootton Bassett and surrounding areas. We now have a sports facility with a capacity to cope with the demands of a growing population eager to enjoy football, tennis, cricket and running.
Alongside the sport we have an excellent bar and social area for use by members and non-members alike, all efficiently managed by Becky Gammon, our new site manager. It’s definitely worth making a visit to the new Gerard Buxton Sports Grounds to see for yourself what’s happening and how you can benefit from the wonderful new facilities.
Site update – 1st May 2015
Royal Wootton Bassett Sports Association new ground site update
High quality sports facility takes shape
Construction sites are fascinating places. Holding promise of what is to be, but where some imagination is still required to give a complete picture. At the new Gerard Buxton Sports Ground on the edge of Royal Wootton Bassett, the imagination is not having to work too hard now, as progress across the site is taking place at full speed.
A site visit on 18 April revealed major progress since last month with the interior of the clubhouse and all-weather areas. Inside the clubhouse the structure is now very clear, and it looks fantastic – wide, and high in the central social area, it’s going to be a great space for reliving all your sporting moments – triumphs and failures!
Outside, the foundation layers for the Artificial Grass Pitch (AGP) and the tennis courts are in place. Day after day, lorry loads of chipped stone has been delivered for the base layers – each layer a different and highly-specified type of material. The AGP is a full-sized football pitch. Add to that the area required for the eight tennis courts, and you’ll get some idea of how much stone is required for the foundation layers. As you would expect, close monitoring of the work is being carried out by professional teams to ensure the courts and AGP will meet strict quality standards set out by the sports governing bodies.
The stadium football pitch and the main cricket square and pitch are looking in fine condition given the sunny weather we are enjoying. The next challenge is to connect irrigation piping to allow much-needed watering of the turf.
With work on the access road beginning soon and continued activity across the rest of the site, the vision of the new Gerard Buxton Sports Ground is nearing completion. We are all set for a hand-over at the end of June, and an opening event on Saturday 1 August. More on this exciting event in future articles.
